Asthenospheric Flow From East Asia to the Philippine Sea Plate Revealed by Rj‐MCMC Inversion of Surface Waves

Abstract The Pacific and Philippine Sea Plate subductions have resulted in controlled the development of a typical trench‐arc‐back‐arc system NE Asia since Cenozoic. formation widely distributed intraplate volcanoes dynamic pattern entire region are still debated. Here we constructed three‐dimensional anisotropic S‐wave velocity model by inverting Rayleigh wave dispersion using modified reversible‐jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo (rj‐MCMC) algorithm. resulting revealed localized mantle upwelling beneath an ongoing lithospheric downwelling central Korean Peninsula. This suggests vigorous asthenosphere lithosphere interactions, which is likely to control spatial distribution Cenozoic volcanoes. fast directions show clockwise rotation Asia, eventually points Nankai Trough. observation broadly consistent with shear splitting presence flow from East China Plate. slab window Trough within subduction may accommodate China. Our study indicates that interaction Philippine, Plates, Eurasian Plates plays essential role controlling volcanism Asia.
